Addressing the

most impactful environmental issue

in the Pacific Northwest

The Center for Sustainability and Working Rivers exists to educate the public about the environmental and climate benefits of the Columbia / Snake River system of hydropower, navigation, and irrigation.

CSWR is a non-partisan, non-political educational organization and does not endorse political candidates or engage in lobbying activities.

Benefits of Working Rivers

Clean and Reliable Hydropower

Hydropower is the number one source of carbon-free energy in the western U.S. Without the Columbia/Snake River system of dams, we would lose our most essential tool for keeping our power grid reliable and green.

Climate-Friendly Navigation

The Marine Highway (M84) on the Columbia and Snake Rivers transport millions of tons of cargo annually using a fraction of the emissions of alternate forms of travel. Without our system of dams and navigation locks, our regional supply chain's carbon footprint would dramatically increase, setting our climate goals back decades.

Irrigation for Food Security

A safe and reliable food supply is only possible when growers have access to the water they need to sustain established crops. The Columbia and Snake River Dams enable irrigation storage and diversion for over a million acres of agriculture in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
